2. Getting the files

The first step in the installation is to get the files to your PC. The easiest way to do this is by CD-ROM. However, if you don't have a CD-ROM drive, or can't get a CD, you might try copying the files onto floppy disks or getting the files from the network by FTP.

If you are using floppies, go to section Floppy Installation.

If you have a CD-ROM, go to section CD-ROM Installation.

If you are getting the files from the network, see section Getting the files over the network.

2.1 Floppy Installation

There are 8 disks in the base series, plus you will need one disk from the X server series which contains the X server for your hardware. If your floppy drive is not A:, then substitute the letter of your drive for A: in what follows. You may have difficulties running the installation from Windows in this case.

If you are running MS-DOS then insert disk 1 and type:

A:\INSTALL A:

If you are running Windows 95, you can start the installation by inserting disk 1 then double-clicking on the ``Install'' icon on the A: drive.

You will be prompted for the other disks. If you wish to install onto a drive other than the C: drive (e.g. you don't have 40M free on drive C:), you can type

A:\INSTALL A: X:

where you replace X: with the drive of your choice. If you do this, all references to the C: drive in what follows should be read as X:. Note that this option may not work on all systems.

2.2 CD-ROM Installation

The files you need are in the directory BLUEINST on the CD-ROM. For simplicity in this document, we will assume that your CD-ROM is drive D:. To install the base Linux files to the C: drive, run the following command (substituting your CD-ROM's drive letter for D:):

D:\BLUEINST\INSTALL D:\BLUEINST

If instead you wish to install to a drive other than the C: drive, you can type:

D:\BLUEINST\INSTALL D:\BLUEINST X:

where you replace X: with the drive of your choice. If you do this, all references to the C: drive in what follows should be read as X:. Note that this option may not work on all systems.

2.3 Getting the files over the network

The files you need are accessible from the web page mentioned at the top of this document (keep following links to ``download'' and ``DOS / Windows''). You will need three files:

Then to install to the C: drive, run:

<download path>\INSTALL <download path>

If you wish to install to another drive, type:

<download path>\INSTALL <download path> X:

where you replace X: with the drive of your choice. If you do this, all references to the C: drive in what follows should be read as X:. Note that this option may not work on all systems.
